Skyward is a large-scale installation created by artist and designer Ezequiel Pini, also known as Six N Five, for Manar Abu Dhabi 2025.
The work explores the connection between earth and sky, and the subtle threshold where matter and light begin to speak to one another.
At its center stands a 10.5 ton monolithic gabbro stone extracted from Ras al Khaimah. Formed over millions of years by geological forces and refined by hand over weeks, the stone carries a deep sense of time and origin. Its atoms, like ours, were born inside ancient stars, making it not only a fragment of the earth but also a fragment of the cosmos.
Facing it rises a vertical mirrored surface that reflects the desert sky and projects a digital choreography inspired by the constellations of Abu Dhabi. These sequences echo the region’s long tradition of celestial orientation, where stars guided travelers across the desert and the sea for centuries.
Between these two elements, Skyward becomes a threshold, a moment of quiet orientation and stillness. The inclined mirror acts as an artificial horizon, merging reflection and landscape and inviting visitors to look upward and reconnect with the vastness above them.
The materials speak of two worlds. The handcrafted stone, grounded and timeless, holds geological memory. The mirrored digital surface, weightless and ever changing, evokes the immateriality of the cosmos. Together they create a silent dialogue between permanence and transformation, between what is visible and what can only be sensed.
Minimal and immersive, Skyward aligns with the theme of The Light Compass not as a literal instrument, but as an emotional and spatial guide. It invites visitors to slow down, to feel their own presence suspended between earth and sky, and to find, perhaps, a personal direction through stillness.
